Ruta 7, Chile’s Carretera Austral, runs from Puerto Montt to Villa O’Higgins, where the road ends. The journey passes through fjords and temperate rainforest in the north, the Queulat hanging glacier and remote valleys around Puyuhuapi and Coyhaique, before reaching the dramatic landscapes of Cerro Castillo, Lago General Carrera, the Marble Caves, and the Río Baker farther south. Beyond Villa Cerro Castillo, gravel sections add to the adventure as the road continues through Patagonia’s remote steppe to Cochrane and finally Villa O’Higgins, with paving work steadily changing the balance between asphalt and gravel.

The free ferry from Puerto Yungay to Río Bravo takes about 45–60 minutes. Service runs up to 10 times a day in January and February and around 4 times per day from April through September. During peak season, riders should arrive at Puerto Yungay at least an hour early, as space can fill quickly.
